To Dress or Not To Dress

Ever since I was a child I loved Halloween.  As soon as the school year started in September my mind wandered directly to Halloween and what kind of costume I should wear for that year.  In my opinion the fun has been taken out of Halloween for my students.  They are no longer allowed to simply be kids, run away with their imagination and share their joys with their friends.

Orange and Black Day or Crazy Hair Day is just not the same as dressing up in a costume for Halloween.  The best costumes always left us guessing who was behind that mask or how did they ever come up with such a great idea. Everyone laughed and had a great time.

I want to see the originality of my students.  Where do their imaginations / fantasies take them? If they have put a lot of effort into finding the right costume for themselves why not wear it for more than the Trick or Treating on the evening of Halloween?

Now we often hear people say "Halloween is for after school.", "It wastes precious learning time.", "Not everyone celebrates Halloween so we shouldn't celebrate it at all!"

The day is just not the same for me any more.  What is your opinion?

  1. Welcome to blogging world, German Dancer! Good to finally see you here.

For me, Halloween was one of those days that I dreaded. We were not a very original family and I came as a cat. EVERY YEAR. I loved trick-or-treating though. To me, that was the best part about that day.

From a teacher's perspective, it doesn't really matter to me whether students are allowed to wear a costume. I usually consider the day to be a bit of a write-off as the kids are usually too excited to focus.

I think, like every other special occasion, that Halloween has become too commercialized. People are encouraged to spend a lot of money to celebrate one day out of a year.

  3. I think halloween is great.
I would love too celebrate it at school to see all the great costume ideas everyone comes up with.
Im still not sure what I want to dress up as this year but I went as a vampire last year.
    It was awesome!
I dont know what I would do without Halloween!

  4. Kids love Halloween! They should be allowed to dress up at school to show their creativity and imagination. Teachers should dress up too. It would be funny to see them in costumes that show THEIR creativity. I think it would be great to wear your costume for more than just the time that you go trick or treating.

  5. I really like Halloween!
I think of it as a time to hang out in cool costumes and go out Trick-or-Treating with my friends after school!
Last year I hung out with my family including all my cousins, my Oma and Opa,Aunts and Uncles, my parents and sister!
One of my cousins dressed up as a popcorn combo from the movie theater and my littlest cousin was a DJ.(He was so cute!) I was a witch but this year I am being something new.My entire family dresses up...
    (even the adults)
My mom says she used to have alot of fun dressing up with her friends at school on Halloween.
Part of me wants to dress up at school, but the other part is just fine with crazy hair day!
    Can't wait until Monday!:)

  6. Hi I am one of the students from the English program in our school. our blog is forest14.blogspot.com i do agree that dressing up your hair isn't as fun as dressing up your whole body. this year im going as Scream. i have a mask that comes with a heart.
when you squeeze the heart blood(red water and food coloring)gushes out of the plastic outline on the mask.
i also have a bloody blade and when you turn it upside down blood gushes down the bottom to the top.
    this Halloween should be fun.

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

  7. Growing up in Germany we did not celebrate Halloween but we got our chance to dress up at Fasnacht, which in my opinion was even more fun with all the music and parades. Today I love watching our kids' excitement as they debate what to wear and fantasize about the mountains of candy that they are going to get.

However, I agree with the Big HAM that unfortunately this is yet another holiday that has been thoroughly commercialized. It boggles my mind when my parents tell me that in L.A. there are Halloween stores the size of Superstore.

Perhaps we should remember this year that the best fun is not be had in spending more money on endless Halloween decorations but in having a Pumkin carving fest with your friends, in baking your own ghoulish Halloween treats with your siblings or in raiding your mother's cupboards to decorate your front porch with your family.

    Happy Halloween!

  8. Halloween is one of the best times of the year because you get lots of candy. But I would rather instead of doing crazy hair/black and orange day we could dress up in our costumes we are going to wear that evening. But the thing is we are supposed to have fun like every year. I agree with kpuey that it isn't as fun but still fun and his costume sounds cool.

  9. Halloween is awsome! But why waste all that money on one day of the year? I agree with Tweety that carving pumkins with your friends is really fun ,but I think Trick-or-Treating is more fun. My mom says thattmy 5 month brother could probly fit in my 4 year old brother's Tigger costume! One of the best parts of Halloween is watching the Kindergarteners run around in the classroom on November 1st after eating 5 Aero bars. Have a great Halloween!

I personally am not allowed to celebrate Halloween, so naturally am not allowed to dress up. But every year my church has a "Halloween" celebration and at the end we get candy. So while you go out in the cold, dressed up and hunting for candy I just have it handed to me!

I agree half with what someone said earlier teachers SHOULD dress up for Halloween cause, for them its just watching the kids come to school looking silly for a reason. the teachers set it all up anyways. We should be able to watch the TEACHERS come to school looking silly so that we can get a kick out of it.See you bloggers at school tomorrow! ~Violetpuppie$

  11. It would be great if we could do crazy hair day and dress up as what your being for halloween.
But if your costume has a wig or something it wouldnt be that great.

  12. I don't celebrate Halloween, or go trick or treating. But I think the idea of Crazy Hair day and wearing black and orange is cool because my mom ususally finds a really cool hair style. Like last year I looked like a green and black Peacock.

Even though I don't go trick or treating, we usually carve a pumpkin, then put it on our front steps and give out candy to trick or treaters. Or just bake cookies for our family, turn out the lights on our main floor, then go in our basement and watch a movie.

  13. Halloween is the best cause you get to dress up and you get so much candy. I always wanted to wair my hot dog costume to school. I don't get why we can't dress up. My cousins school has a contest for who has the best costume. If people aren't allowed dress up then they don't have to. I think the awnser is to dress.

  15. Hey guys,
I agree with most of you that crazy hair / dress in black and orange day will still be ton of fun but I think that we should have the privellage of doing either or. It's just not fair that other schools get a whole whack of days that we don't get, including halloween dress-up day. It's also not fair that only OUR (grade 6 B) class didn't get to dress in kindergarten up because of 1 student who doesn't even go here any more, and we dont even get one day to replace it?

    What do YOU think?

  16. I totally agree that dressing up is the best! I remember making costumes every year and running house to house to fill up our pillow cases. AWESOME!
We do need to respect everyone individuality and values - so get creative and imaginative and celebrate in your own way!

  17. I think that har Dee Har Har's cousin's school has a good idea. Not everybody had to come dressed up but they could have crazy hair.
I agree that it is getting to commercialized. I think it is fun to make your own costume. This year and last year I made my own costume. It takes time to make it,but then people see you put a lot of work into it.

  18. Hi I am a student from the english class. Happy to meet you in blog. Living in india we do not celabrate halloween but I am sure that halloween is fun. I am just here before two months and I have heard a lot about halloween and I am sure it is fun. I agree with the German Dancer because I have many friends who share their thinking about halloween and the fun stuff they do at that time. They always speak about what costume they are going to wear. It is always fun to have halloween WITH COSTUMES

    happy HALLOWEEN!!!!

  19. I really enjoy Halloween! I love going from house to house in our awesome costumes! Even though I don't really enjoy the candy, I like going for a dark walk in our neighborhood. I can't wait to hear all the kids yelling Trick or Treat at our door! As for WACKY HAIR DAY I absolutely love coming to school with a funny hairdo and seeing all the other cool creations!!

Though I also agree with The Big HAM, I don't know why people buy Huge decorations to cover their house and all. My Dad, Brother, Sister and I just carve a pumpkin and light a candle inside! Why waste money on decorations for one day out of a whole year? Anyway...

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT HALLOWEEN!!

  20. Halloween is awesome! You get loads of free candy, I don't get why some people don't go trick or treating. At school I think it is awesome that we can make are hair all crazy and wear orange and black but I really think that we should be able to wear our costumes to school on monday.

I agree with The Big HAM because, some people buy so much stuff for one day of the year, like inflatables, plastic skeletons and other stuff, I just don't get why people need to buy so much. Anyway Happy halloween!

  21. I absolutely love Halloween! I have so much fun choosing what I want to be and then figuring out how I want to dress up as that character or person two or three months prior to Halloween. This year I have decided to be Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean since I LOVE the movies. At our school we get to dress up in our Halloween costume on the day of Halloween and it's SO much fun! I think it would be great for the kids at Forest Heights to celebrate Halloween the entire day as well! Especially to make use of the cool costumes they have created for the special day:)

  22. When I was a kid, we used to dress up- but only in the afternoon at school. Our costumes were ALL homemade- eliminating the commercialism that we see today in a store bought Batman... My mom made me a Princess Leia costume, and my brother was Luke as a pilot. My dad spent hours carving blasters out of wood and painting them. I remember one friend going as a bunch of grapes and she couldn't sit down or she would pop her purple balloons... It was WAY cooler to create something than to buy it.
I would love to see kids use their imaginations more and come up with costumes from items in their homes. Then showing them to their friends at school could be tied into a Re-use/Recycle unit. Just like the designers who make dresses out of pop cans or duct tape. Some families still go to a lot of effort to create masterpieces, and a family being creative together and being able to share that with their friends is something that should be encouraged more in these days of commercial holidays.

  23. I love Halloween. I like it especially when all the houses are decorated really scary. Like when there is smoke everywhere and ghosts and all that.

I'm dressing up this year and I'm going with a friend. I have a scary mask which also freaks me out!! When i got my costume, after i tried it on, i almost melted after about 3 Minutes! (Well, it will come in handy if it gets cold outside) My sister is also dressing up and her costume matches mine perfectly(inside joke with me and my family), and i can't wait to see how much candy i get. Last year our bags almost overflowed! I ate all my candy in less than a month and my sister still had some left this year!

I don't think we should where our costumes to school, because if you are running and you trip, you will get a hole in your costume and it will get dirty, so your costume will be ruined.

I also agree with some people about why do people decorate their house for only one day of the whole year, and why do people decorate their house like a week before Halloween? If people that lived in the neighborhood walked by that house everyday, and then go there on Halloween, wouldn't it ruin the surprise? They should decorate their house 1 or 2 days before Halloween.

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!

  24. I think that if we dress up for school on halloween it would show our imagination. I understand that some people could be embarrased with their costume, but those people don't have to wear their costume. My other opinion is that kids might accidently step on other costumes, then it would get dirty, ripped or broken and you wouldn't have a very good costume anymore.

I totaly agree with turtle101 about the wig thing, but other then that I think crazy hair day is great. Last year I had my hair in unicorn horn form and I kept on losing hair bands but it was very fun.

  25. I think that Halloween is awesome and that we should dress up. Im going to be a zombie and it would be cool to take my costume to school so other people could see it too.

I also agree with swigglestick that people shouldnt decorate there houses a week before before halloween because it ruins the suprise, and I love suprises.

I know some people dont celebrate halloween but I think that they shouldn't have to come to school that day because its mostly fun and they wont miss that much work.

Also, I think that swirly R is correct about your costume being ruined at recess , but then again we could wear our costumes a day after halloween.

  26. I know that this is not for dressing up but I think the day after Halloween should not be a school day. Why I think that is because kids are hyper and full of candy. Then they can't
concentrate. We could also have a fun day after Halloween.
    What do you think?

  27. My opinion is that halloween is an all day thing. It is not just after school like some parent think. Although if some kids come to school with a super cool costume some kids would probably get distracted. so to those teachers who don't like loud classes might disagree. whereas if some one has wacky hair it could be admired quietly. so to me it's not to dress.

Like I said yesterday i don't go trick or treating but i found that nowadays everything is so violent my neighbors across the street always make a big deal about a week before they start setting up a huge graveyard with lots of tombstones fake smelly smoke and lots more its enough to give a little kid nightmares its creepy!

  30. Halloween is not my favourite celebration. I'm not a person who likes to dress up that much. Once in a while it is fine, but I like to see other people dress up more. I would like to come to school with a costume though! I think that would be lots of fun!

When I go out TRICK-OR-TREATING or sometimes if we go to a store for costume ideas, I usually see gross Halloween decorations. I think Halloween would be more fun without those. But then again, I know that some of you would disagree with me. For me, Halloween is just ghosts, pumpkins, bats, fun costumes(non-gruesome ones) and candy. What do you think, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!

  31. I am not a fan of dressing up. Never have been. It is not something that is important to me. I would rather spend the evening handing out candy than going out and having to dress up. I see Halloween as simply another day. I appreciatate that some people buy into the commercialism of the day and want to go all out for it. But this does not get at the true nature of the celebration, just as the commercialism of Christmas does not lead to people appreciating the true meaning of that day.

  32. I think making a costume is really fun but it takes too much time because I play hockey lots and the rest of my family has lots of sports too. besides, What is the point of putting so much effort in to a costume when your friends don't get to see it? This exact topic was being discussed on the radio today and quite a few people disagreed with black and orange/crazy hair day. I think the answer is to dress!

  33. Halloween brings back memories of fun-filled, spooky nights trick or treating with good friends or family in our neighborhood that had somehow been transformed into a shadow-filled, dark place overnight. We loved going house to house and seeing who had the heaviest pillowcase filled with treats :-) and there always seemed to be one extra-spooky house that we would dare each other to visit. School was where we could see the neat costumes all our friends came up with - otherwise you wouldn't get the chance to appreciate their cool outfits!!
P.S. Teachers always dressed up at my school & sometimes had the BEST costumes :D

  35. Dressing up is a lot of fun and it is great to pretend you are someone or something else for a day (just as long as you are not mean). However, for me it takes me a long time to dress up and then scare you. You see, I like to dig myself about 15 cms into the ground and curl up into a ball (or should I say bulb?). And then I fall asleep, snore a little, grow some roots, watch the worms and ants, fall back asleep, and then CAHPOW spring comes and out I pop to scare you with my red colours (just like Dracula, ha ha hah) but sadly by then Halloween is over. But wait . . . the crazy part is that by then you are so happy to see me that you are joyful and not scared. Maybe I am not meant to be scary. No matter what, enjoy dressing up for Halloween (sorry it can't be at school) and see you next spring.

  37. I really think that we should be allowed to wear our costumes. Since we buy them or make then we should be able to wear them at school instead of just trick or treating. At all my other schools we have all have been able to wear our costumes. I was really disappointed when I heard that we couldn't wear our costumes. If some one doesn't believe in Hall-O-Ween or doesn't want to participate they don't need to.

  45. I am seeing on the blog that a lot of people love to dress up and I love the creativeness that comes with designing a costume. There are so many neat ideas that are invented for costumes portraying characters, ideas or concepts. In the past Forest Heights has had themed dress up days and those are really fun too. What I don't like about Halloween is that even when there has been a stipulation about scary costumes some people ignore that because THEY like really that type of thing. We have neighbors that have corpses and spooky sound and visual effects all over their front yard and most of the elementary age kids just avoid their house. I think that wacky hair day is a fantastic way to have fun on Halloween.
